Derby To Host Sept. 11 Memorial Service Sunday

The City of Derby is scheduled to host a service on the Derby Green Sunday at 10 a.m. to honor the memory of those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001 and the resulting conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Derby has been approved by the Port Authority to obtain a piece of steel from the World Trade Center.

The city hopes to unveil it at the service Sunday, but it is not clear whether they’ll receive it in time.

It looks like we’ll eventually have a piece of steal, an i‑beam, from the World Trade Center that will eventually become a permanent fixture on the Green,” said Derby Fire Chief William Nicoletti, who is helping to organize the memorial.

In addition to Derby officials, state lawmakers have been invited, along with elected officials, police and firefighters from Ansonia and Shelton.

We’ll have an honor guard from the police department and the fire department led by a bagpiper down to the gazebo on the Green and we’ll set up all the colors over there,” Nicoletti said.

Wreaths will be put down and a moment of silence will be observed to mark the date.

We really want to make sure that this all-encompassing of everyone who lost their lives during and since 9/11. We’ll try to touch on the civilians, the police, the EMS personnel, the firefighters, the Port Authority and military who have died since 9/11,” Nicoletti said.

Elizabeth Street will be closed from Thompson Place to Fifth Street during the event. The parking garage on Thompson Place will be free from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., Nicoletti said.

The plan is to have all the firetrucks lined up on Elizabeth Street,” Nicoletti said.

The memorial starts at 10 a.m.
