“The bridge is structurally deficient and functionally obsolete,” according to information posted on the state Department of Transportation’s website.
“Its structural deficiency is primarily due to the deteriorated condition of the deck and substructure.”
Additional info from the DOT includes:
- The proposed project consists of completely removing the existing structure.
- The bridge superstructure will be removed and the pier will be removed to one foot below the top of the median.
- The west abutment will remain in place, and the east abutment will be removed and the surrounding area re-graded to match the nearby slopes.
- The portion of Bluff Street between Emmett Avenue and Mohawk Avenue will be removed and replaced with appropriate landscaping.
- The metal beam rail and chain link fence along Emmett Avenue will be extended across the area where the bridge is removed.
- Interruptions to Route 8 will consist of night time lane and/or shoulder closures to remove the beams, pier, and east abutment.
The cost is expected to be $1.15 million. The work could start in 2018.
