Mayor Mark Lauretti issued a prepared statement Thursday saying he will not run for governor during “this election cycle.”
Lauretti supporters had been circulating petitions with hopes of getting him on the governor’s ballot.
In his statement, the mayor notes the corruption trial of developer James Botti, who claimed to have bribed Lauretti.

Lauretti was never charged.
“The trial of James Botti and the long-term federal investigation of the City of Shelton were difficult for Shelton residents and public officials in this City, including me. The integrity of our system of government in Shelton was put on trial. Even with the trial over, the disruption in costs will linger.”
