Derby GOP Endorses Szewczyk For Treasurer

The Derby Republicans nominated Tony Szewczyk for city treasurer, according to documents filed in Derby City Hall.

Members of the Republican Town Committee held a nominating convention July 22 to endorse their slate.

The Republican convention was short and sweet — but hit a snag in the hours after the convention when Keith McLiverty, the current Derby treasurer, called reporters to decline the GOP nomination for treasuer.

McLiverty ran with the Republicans in 2013, but said he told the GOP in advance of the July 22 convention that he would be seeking a spot on Dugatto’s ticket. The message apparently did not get conveyed to the entire Republican Town Committee.

Szewczyk’s name appears on Republican nomination info submitted July 29.

Szewczyk is a familiar name in Derby politics and community service.

He currently serves on the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission. He previously served on the Board of Aldermen and the city’s now defunct Parking Authority.

He is a retired architect.

The Republicans unanimously endorsed Richard Dziekan, a retired Hamden police officer, to challenge incumbent Democratic Mayor Anita Dugatto, who is trying for a second term.
