The cleanup commences again from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Rain date: May 1, 8 a.m.

The City of Derby and the Housatonic Valley Association began a cleanup effort along the banks of the Naugatuck River last year.

Many volunteers from Derby and the surrounding communities as well as Derby’s Blight Officers, Public Works, police, fire, and other municipal departments pitched in to help clean tons of debris that had been discarded along the river banks for many years.

The effort was a huge success, with over 100 volunteers helping to beautify Derby.

This year, Mayor Staffieri has asked everyone to once again join forces to tackle the remaining debris in this area.

Most of the property along the Naugatuck River in Derby is owned by The United Illuminating Company. Representatives, including Larry Mai, Annette Potasz and Don Pillo were contacted this year to request permission for another cleanup.

UI has once again allowed Derby access onto the property and has begun to clean up and cut down branches, trees and brush to allow volunteers to access the banks for cleanup day.

A project of this magnitude requires an enormous amount of manpower and so I am urging each and everyone of you who use the Greenway and who can appreciate the recreational and aesthetic value of the Naugatuck River to, once again, put on their boots, grab a rake and a pair of gloves and be prepared to join us on Saturday, April 24th to help make Derby and the banks of the Naugatuck River even more beautiful,” the mayor said.

The city will provide rakes, but volunteers can bring their own.
