Seymour Declines Resident’s Offer

The Seymour Board of Selectmen Tuesday respectfully declined a resident’s offer to personally pay $5,000 for the upcoming town and school budget referendum.

William Ferris, on the heels of a contentious Finance Board meeting last week, offered to pay for the referendum if the Board of Finance sent the school budget to voters with the full, $1.2 million increase requested by the school board.

The Board of Finance last week voted to allocate an additional $500,000 for Seymour schools, much to the dismay of Ferris and fellow parents.

First Selectman Paul Roy told Ferris Tuesday that the offer was not appropriate — and that was backed up by the town’s attorney.

Ferris said he still plans to donate $5,000 to the Seymour School District.

Members of the Board of Selectmen had worried that accepting Ferris offer would have set a set a precedent.

The Board of Finance will have a public hearing on the town and school budgets April 5 at Seymour Middle School.

The Selectmen set the date for the town meeting on the budget proposals for April 14 at 7 p.m. at the middle school.

The Selectmen set the date for a school and town budget referendum for April 26, at the Seymour Community Center.

A second referendum, if needed, is set for May 10.
