The Board of Education voted Monday to accept an $8,125 donation from parents that will enable the high school to have a wrestling team this year.
The district cut the program last year, saying it could no longer afford it.
However, parents of student athletes on the team stepped up last September and kicked in about $7,500 to save the program.
The school board has eliminated several sports programs, including freshman sports, in an effort to save money in difficult economic times.
Assistant Superintendent Rick Belden said this year’s donation will allow the wrestlers to take part in 18 meets, not including sectional tournaments or championships.
Board Chairman Bruce Baker thanked the parents for donating the funds so students can continue wrestling.
“It’s terrific for the parents to do that for the kids,” Baker said.
The parents responsible for funding the team did not attend Monday’s meeting and officials did not have their names.
Board member Fred Stanek was also happy to see what the parents had done.
However, he hopes the school district can find the money to finance wrestling in future years.
“I feel we, as a board of education, need to find a way to fund this program,” he said.
