Sinkhole Closes Brook Street In Shelton

Brook Street in Shelton was closed Wednesday afternoon due to a small sinkhole at the intersection of Howe Avenue.

Bill Higgins, an operator with the Highway department, said that the hole would likely be filled by 5:30 p.m., at which point the road could be re-opened.

At about 4:30 p.m., Higgins said the crews were unclear about what caused the hole to appear.

It was about 2‑feet by 5‑feet. Higgins was not sure how deep the hole was.

He speculated it might have been created after water got under the pavement in nearby potholes.

Traffic on Howe Avenue was moving smoothly, despite the road closure. Howe Avenue remained open.

Workers planned to fill the hole with ground-up asphalt and some of the tar from the nearby Coram Avenue paving project.
