UPDATE: Stabbing On Hawkins Street, Then Shots Fired

The 19-year-old victim of a stabbing Wednesday is in stable condition after emergency surgery at Yale New Haven Hospital, police said Thursday.

The victim, a Derby man, was stabbed multiple times after a fight broke out in the area of Hawkins and Cottage streets in Derby, according to a press release issued Thursday by Lt. Sal Frosceno.

Police were back on Hawkins several hours after the stabbing, after someone shot up the rear of a residence near the scene of the stabbing, apparently a retaliatory act.

Police have not made any arrests in the incident yet, the press release said.

Frosceno said when police responded to the scene about 9:05 p.m., there were about 50 to 60 people gathered in the street.

The victim had walked to a corner store to call for help.
