Derby — Perkin Elmer of Shelton once again took home this year’s “Community Corporate Cup,” an annual event that promotes healthy lifestyles in the lower Valley.
The Corporate Cup — sponsored by the Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce, the Valley YMCA, Griffin Hospital and the Valley United Way — is a series of events all year long. The events include everything from bowling to a 5K race.
Teams from businesses throughout the lower Valley participate and earn points. The idea is to lower blood pressure and cholesterol and live healthier lives.
This year’s winners were announced during a ceremony Tuesday night at Griffin Hospital by Valley YMCA President Jack Walsh and Valley YMCA Executive Director Suzanne Reilly.
Not only did Perkin Elmer’s team take first place overall with 146 points — it managed to finish first in five of the nine of the events.
Oh, and did I mention this is the third year in a row they’ve won the cup?
Perkin Elmer’s Geraint Phillips lost 40 pounds during this year’s competition.
Meanwhile, Perkin Elmer’s Bob Van Egghen is the pride of Shelton, having won this year’s Wiffle Ball competition.
“Orienteering was my favorite event,” he said.
Orienteering seemed to be the most popular event.
“I loved orienteering,” said Jo-Anne Sauro of Hawley Lane Shoes.
Hawley Lane Shoes took sixth place this year. Thom Molusis, of the Hawley Lane Shoes team, was psyched to have won darts.
“It’s the first year we won an event!” Molusis said.
Reilly (of the Valley YMCA) said the main focus of the Cup is to encourage healthy lifestyles — although a little friendly competition doesn’t hurt.
“It’s a collaborative effort with the United Way to promote health and wellness in the community and build friendships,” Reilly said.
In addition to the physical events, participants could earn more points by attending stress reduction classes at Griffin Hospital.
For a complete list of participating teams, including how each placed, be sure to visit the Valley United Way’s Web site.
