Two veteran Shelton firefighters have applied to become the city’s next fire chief.
Daryl Osiecki and Mike Ullrich took an oral exam for the chief’s position on Dec. 29.
The Board of Fire Commissioners reviewed the results of the exam at its meeting Tuesday.
Ullrich scored the highest of the two applicants on the test, with a score in the upper 90s.
Both candidates have served as assistant fire chiefs for the department and have more than 20 years experience volunteering as firefighters in Shelton.
Ullrich is a career firefighter in Greenwich and Osiecki is a career firefighter in Hamden.
The Board of Fire Commissioners will schedule interviews with both candidates sometime next week.
Once the fire commissioners recommend a candidate, it is ultimately Mayor Mark Lauretti’s decision on who to appoint to the position, according to city charter.
The position became vacant in late November, when Chief Fran Jones decided not to seek another term.
He served a two-year term that ended Nov. 20.
