Elaine Brandon and Anita Dugatto were expecting that question Thursday afternoon, when they donned historical garb and roamed downtown Derby and Ansonia.
But the nontraditional fundraiser for the Derby Historical Society raised more than a few eyebrows.
The pair got $57 in cash donations toward the annual “Day in 1762 Program” and some valuable exposure for the society, Brandon said.
“We’re trying to make the Valley aware that the Derby Historical Society exists and they can come visit,” Brandon said in between stops Thursday. But they’re also trying to continue a long-time program where area fifth-graders come to the historical society on Elm Street in Ansonia to learn about what life was like more than 200 years ago.
The two women, members of the society’s board of directors, roamed in and out of stores and businesses Thursday, describing the “Day in 1762 Program.” About 1,500 students each year participate, and it costs about $20 for each one, Brandon said. That fee is paid by schools, with the society kicking in when a class or school can’t afford the total cost. In a separate program, members of the historical society visit third-grade classes at their schools to illustrate a day in 1759.
But with school budgets in the region tightening up, the society is looking for businesses and individuals to sponsor students so the program can continue.
Brandon said even though they only received $57 Thursday, they handed out several fliers and expect some responses later on.
