Area Congregations Together (ACT) Spooner House had more than 100 walkers on the Derby Greenway last Saturday morning, Sept. 26.

The 12th annual Walk for the Hungry and Homeless raised more than $11,000. It was a chilly start but walkers and volunteers were happy to help this worthwhile cause.

The Platinum sponsor for this year’s Walk for the Hungry and Homeless is the Valley Community Foundation.

Gold Sponsors include: AD-MERICA, Anton/Bauer, Inc., Naugatuck Savings Bank Foundation, and Webster Bank; the Silver Sponsor is Calvert Safe & Lock, Ltd.; Bronze Sponsors include: Gary’s East Coast Service; Iroquois Gas Transmission System; Professional Tire and Valley Parish Nursing Home.

Non-profit Area Congregations Together was formed in 1979 to help fill gaps in the Lower Naugatuck Valley’s social service network. Today, ACT operates Spooner House, a facility that provides shelter to approximately 250 men, women and children each year. Spooner House is recognized as one of the most comprehensive emergency shelter programs in Connecticut. The ACT Valley Food Bank provides a week’s supply of groceries each month to participating families throughout the Naugatuck Valley.

Last year, the Food Bank Program provided 63,000 meals to more than 3,000 people, 1,247 of them children.

ACT is devoted to helping clients establish self-sufficiency in an atmosphere of respect and dignity. Area Congregations Together, Inc. is a partner agency of the Valley United Way.
