Ansonia Democrats Wednesday nominated Mayor James Della Volpe to run for an unprecedented seventh term in office.

In a short speech, Della Volpe accepted the nomination and thanked his supporters.

“You all know who I am, and what we are doing together to make Ansonia a more prosperous city,” Della Volpe said.

In an interview after the nomination, Della Volpe listed his goals for the next two years.

  • To get bonding money from the state to upgrade the Armory as a community center.
  • ”To fight blight in our neighborhoods.”

Della Volpe said he plans to go door to door to campaign for the general election.

“I don’t take anything for granted,” he said.

Democratic Town Committee chairwoman Eileen Krugel said she is confident in this year’s slate.

“I think we have a phenomenal slate,” Krugel said. “We have good, good people and their hearts are in the right place. They want to do the best for Ansonia.”

The resignation of Alderman Spero Jordanides this month leaves a vacancy in Ansonia’s fifth Ward. The Democratic Town Committee nominated Howard Madigosky to run for that spot in November.

Does Krugel believe the seat will stay in Democratic hands?

“With Howie? Absolutely,” she said.

Krugel said the nominating committee is only for the November elections. The Democrats haven’t publicly said if they will post Madigosky in Jordanides’ spot for the remainder of his term.

  1. I hope he comes to my house. I have a few words for him. Same goals as the last election. Ansonia needs a change. Maybe some independent to run for office and alderman.

  2. “”You all know who I am, and what we are doing together to make Ansonia a more prosperous city,” Della Volpe said.

A more prosperous city? Really? I know this was a short acceptance speech but now I’m interested to hear the Mayor expand on this during election season. How exactly do they plan to make Ansonia a more prosperous city? What are they going to do now that they have not done in the last 12 years? This is the only Valley town that is not committed to economic development (even though we pay a six figure salary to a director).

On the Riverside Apartments – well Mayor, some of your residents are now starting to realize that the crime problem that was centralized in the Olson Drive area is now spreading to other parts of the city as these fine citizens are relocated to other homes throughout the city.

Market rate (section 8?)condos in the Palmer/ATP buildings? You may want to take a look at the building that is attached to them. It’s called Farrel’s and it’s a dilapidated building with busted out windows sitting on (most likely) a toxic waste dump. Good luck.

Fountain Lake and solar panels on municipal buildings would be nice if they come to fruition. Good luck with getting bonding money from the state for the armory.

To fight blight in our neighborhoods? Does that include the Farrel and Ansonia Copper & Brass “war zone”? I am all for cleaning up blight in neighborhoods, but unless this city does something about the Main St/East Main St areas it will be like putting lipstick on a pig.

And finally, to Kruegel’s confidence that Jordaine’s seat will remain in Democratic hands…of course it will. But it is not an endorsement of the Democratic party’s leadership in town, but rather because the Republicans in this city may be the weakest group throughout the State of CT. Apart from Marini, they cannot even challenge any of the Dems for the BOA let alone Mayor. And in a City with so much to gripe about, they go to the BOA meetings and complain about garbage men picking up trash at 4:30 in the morning or other stupid crap. How about challenging them on economic development, or a failing school system? Rising crime rates? Reducing spending and cutting out waste?

  3. Spot on, Truman .. it just goes to show you the problem with Ansonia. The same local gov’t for 12 years with no end in site. Change? Apparently no one wants it …

  4. I agree totally. Now is the time for people to not vote according to what party they belong to but for what is best for Ansonia. I’ve been a homeowner for 10 years here and saw a huge change in my neighborhood once they took down the buildings on Olson Drive. They really need to get the crime down before they even think about tearing any more down. Here’s hoping that someone good goes up against him and the residents of Ansonia wake up and see what needs to be done for our City to truly prosper.
