Police are investigating a drug complaint involving a staff member of the Derby Middle School, the Valley Independent Sentinel has learned.
Police were called to the middle school Thursday morning (Sept. 8), according to Derby Police Chief Gerald Narowski.
“At 9:25 this morning, police were dispatched to 10 Nutmeg Ave. for a report of a drug-narcotic violation,” Narowski said. “It was a complaint that a staff member was in possession of narcotics on school property.”
No arrests were made. The investigation is ongoing, Narowski said.
“I am going to reserve further comment until the conclusion of the investigation,” the chief said.
Derby School Superintendent Stephen Tracy classified the incident as a personnel issue.
The Valley Independent Sentinel has the name of the staff member, but opted not to publish it Thursday.
Tracy said the staff member “will not be in school tomorrow and he is not expected to be in school for awhile.”
“Beyond that I’m not at liberty to say anything,” Tracy said.
Efforts to reach the staff member by the Valley Indy Thursday were unsuccessful.

It’s in the hands of Chief Gerald Narowski and the capable Derby Police Department.
Kudos to the Valley Independent for not publishing the name of a man that has not even arrested, merely accused. The Valley, Derby in particular, can become a vicious rumor mill at times.
where did you read in the article that it was a man it said staff member, not man or woman
It does state that the accused was a he reread the article.. the guy probably had a medical condition and needed to take a pain killer poor guy now hes gonna loose his job
to whom it may concern myself and 4 other people read the article it did not state a he at the time i posted the comment.it said a staff member period.i think mr. driscoll added the he after my comment.he is upset because i dont agree with his policy of not being able to remain anonymous when you post on this thread.
I’m confused by this thread — and I wrote the article.
I thought I wrote “he” in this article. We constantly update stories/catch typos/add new info, etc., so the “he” could have been dropped during one of those revisions.
Or maybe I just never wrote “he.” Quite honestly, I can’t remember.
Mike, that stuff about me dropping or adding the “he” because I’m upset — that’s meant as humor, right?
I’m not upset at you. And aren’t we neighbors?
I realize that it is a convention of the English language to use the pronoun “he” as the default when the sex of a human being is unknown. I hope that my benign comment hasn’t caused too much of a stir. Truth be told, it is an irrelevant detail as the sentiment of my comment remains the same.
we are all neighbors i really didnt mean anything by my comment.i know what we read and thats why i commented.i like when people get involved in a story.dont take anything i say personally i am just glad to see people are reading you articles on your website.i like your paper online like you say all valley all the time good or bad.i have to agree on one point we are all human and make wrong choices one time or another.we will all get over this.good luck to all those involved.i will not comment any more on this article.
