The president of the Board of Aldermen is scheduled to announce his intent to run for mayor at 6 p.m.
Carmen DiCenso, a former Derby High School football coach, will formally announce at Italian Pavilion, 90 Pershing Drive.
DiCenso is a Democrat, and he’ll try to seek an endorsement from the Derby Town Democratic Committee when its members meet in July to nominate a candidate.
Mayor Anita Dugatto is also a Democrat, and she filed paperwork in late January declaring her intention to seek a third term as mayor.
With two Democrats running, a primary later this year is a possibility, but not a guarantee if the two candidates accept the decision of their party’s committee.
Richard Dziekan, a Republican, has also declared his intent to seek the GOP nod. Dziekan lost narrowly to Dugatto when she ran for a second term.

There’s been a division between Mayor Dugatto and various Democratic Aldermen since at least 2014.

At the Jan. 26 Derby Board of Aldermen meeting, DiCenso raised a number of issues about city management, including the management of the parking garage, City Hall hours, and the use of the Sterling Opera House.
A campaign Twitter page for DiCenso was launched in February.
“I have a passion for our city and a tremendous desire to fix it,” his profile reads. “My administration promises to be more proactive and less reactive. Together, we can do better!”
