ANSONIA – Ten firms placed bids for the upcoming redesign of Nolan Field in Ansonia.
There were two contracts available for firms to bid on – one to prepare the site for future work, and one to install artificial turf across Nolan Field and the neighboring practice field.
The site prep bids range $3.8 million to $6.7 million. The turf installation bids range from $1.9 million to $2.9 million.
The city opened the bids March 25. The Board of Aldermen will select a bidder from those submitted, either at its regular meeting April 8, or at a special meeting shortly after.
The work is part of $10 million in improvements approved by Ansonia voters in 2023 to rehabilitate four fields and parks throughout the city. Nolan Field is the centerpiece of that plan, with its planned improvements making up about 90 percent of the project’s budget.
At Nolan Field, the proposed improvements include the new turfed fields; LED lighting upgrades; new fencing around the fields; and upgrading the bleachers to be ADA-compliant.

The other three fields in the project – Abe Stone Park at Colony Pond, Nelligan Field, and the Ansonia Nature Center – have not yet had site plans approved by the Board of Aldermen.
The work at Nolan Field is expected to take place in two phases, according to past conversations with city officials. The football field will be turfed first during the spring, and the practice fields will be turfed during the summer.
The goal is for the work to be done by August, in time for the football season, city officials have said.
The school building committee is scheduled to meet at 6:30 p.m. March 27 to discuss the bids. They could recommend bidders to the Board of Aldermen at that meeting, city corporation counsel John Marini said.
Not all of the planned work is included in the bid. The basketball and tennis courts shown in the site plan will come later as part of a separate bid, according to Ansonia Economic Development Director and Grant Writer Sheila O’Malley.
For Abe Stone Park and the other fields, Marini said the city will return to discuss them at a later date. He said their bid specifications will depend on how much money is leftover from the Nolan Field work, and how much of the construction materials can be reused.
