ANSONIA – The fire marshal’s office is investigating the cause and origin of a blaze that consumed the second floor of a house on Division Street Wednesday morning (Aug. 6).

No injuries were reported.

Officials said one person was displaced by the fire, but a neighbor said the number of people displaced is higher.

The Ansonia Fire Department received a report around 7:31 a.m. of a house fire at 127 Division St. When firefighters arrived, they saw smoke and fire billowing out of windows on the second floor.

“We had quite a bit of fire and smoke showing out of two windows,” said Assistant Chief Anthony DeLucia, who led the department’s response. “We had two windows of fire, and a bunch of windows of smoke.”

DeLucia said that everyone in the house made it out safely. He said firefighters walked up the building’s stairwell to tackle the fire, which had spread throughout multiple rooms on the second story.

“We cut some holes in the roof, because the fire was up in the ceiling,” DeLucia said.

The smoke plume was visible from at least half a mile as way as the fire was raging.

Firefighters spent about twenty minutes knocking down the fire before it was out. The second floor of the building was “gutted,” according to DeLucia.

The Valley Indy reached out to the fire marshal’s office for more information, but didn’t immediately hear back. DeLucia said investigators remain on the scene.

Derby Fire Department provided an engine and ladder for mutual aid, while Seymour was on-scene in case any rescues were needed. No firefighters were injured, DeLucia said.

The 1,488-square-foot house at 127 Division St. is a single-family masonry home, according to city land records. It was built in 1840.
