DERBY – An Elizabeth Street restaurant that opened in 2023 is closed because of an unspecified tax issue with the state.
Fuego Wine Bar opened at 87 Elizabeth St. in 2023 after a renovation of the 3,000-square foot space. Owners described it as a fusion of Spanish and Latin food.
A Derby resident posted a photo on Facebook Oct. 5 showing a sign had been attached to the restaurant saying the restaurant’s “sales and use tax permit” had been suspended as of Sept. 30.
“NO SALES CAN BE TRANSACTED,” according to the sign.
An email seeking comment was sent to the restaurant.
The permit is required by law in order to sell items in Connecticut.
A spokeswoman from the state’s Department of Revenue Services said in an email she was prohibited by law from commenting on Fuego specifically.
She sent a hyperlink to the state law cited in the notice posted on the glass at Fuego.
The law referenced states a suspension could happen because a business fails to comply with sales tax law in some way. A new permit could be issued if the sales tax issues were resolved with the state.
A search of the state’s business database shows the business registration for the limited liability company that owned Fuego has been forfeited.
Fuego is the fourth bar-restaurant to operate in the space since 2009. The location previously housed Retro, Bar None, and Connie’s.
