DERBY — Four students were charged with disorderly conduct after a fist fight at Derby High School on Thursday (Oct. 23).
No injuries were reported.
The incident caused students to “shelter in place” from about 9:15 a.m. to 10 a.m., meaning students had to remain in the classroom they were in.
“A physical altercation occurred in the hallway during transition time and disrupted the learning environment,” according to a message from Derby High School Principal Jennifer Olson. “Our staff responded quickly to bring the incident under control. To ensure the safety of our students, we placed the school in a shelter in place while school administration responded.”
Derby police were also notified, according to an emergency radio transmission.
Police said they were called to the school at 9:24 a.m.
Two students were fighting, and two additional students joined the fracas, according to police.
The fight was over comments made in a group text, police said.
The Valley Indy did not request their names due to their ages and low-level nature of the charges.
“We are addressing this matter according to school and district policies,” according to the principal’s message. “The safety and well-being of our students are our top priority, and acts of violence will not be tolerated at Derby High School. I share this information to keep you informed about the incident and the school’s response.”
