ANSONIA – The leader of the city’s Democratic Party was charged with driving under the influence after a crash Sunday (Dec. 7).

David Hannon, 53, was also charged with following too closely.

Hannon provided the following statement to The Valley Indy:

“Last night I was arrested for driving under the influence. I fully understand and deeply regret the seriousness of this incident. The officers involved were professional and courteous throughout. I am cooperating fully with the legal process and will have no further comment at this time,” Hannon said.

Police said they received a report of a motor vehicle accident on Bridge Street at about 4:50 p.m.

Police said Hannon rear-ended another vehicle. The driver of the other vehicle was checked out by EMS on scene and declined to go to the hospital.

“(Hannon) submitted to field sobriety tests, was arrested, transported to the station and agreed to take breath tests which showed his blood alcohol level was .168 and .155, both over the legal limit of .080,” according to Ansonia Police Lt. Patrick Lynch.

Hannon was released after posting a $500 bond. He is due in Superior Court Dec. 19 in Derby.

Hannon has been the chairman of the city’s Democratic Party since 2023. The Democrats upended the political hierarchy in Ansonia Nov. 4 by capturing the mayor’s office and all seats on the Board of Aldermen.

Hannon is also the president of the CHCA District 1199 union, according to the organization’s website.
