ANSONIA – Parts of Main Street were closed to traffic Tuesday (Dec. 16) after a bug bomb caused smoke to spread throughout the bar at Legacy Lounge (232 Main St).
The fire department received a call around 1:41 p.m. from residents in upstairs apartments who reported a smell of burning plastic. Responders saw smoke in the bar area downstairs.
According to Ansonia Fire Department Assistant Chief Matt Pitney, responding crews had to force their way into the bar, which was closed at the time. Once inside, they learned from maintenance workers that a bug bomb was the source.
“Building maintenance showed up and told us they had set it off, so that was all that the source was,” Pitney said.
There was no fire in the building. Firefighters had mostly ventilated the smoke by about 2:10 p.m., with a fan set up inside to blow out any remaining smoke.
There were no reported injuries from the smoke.
The building at 232 Main St. is a mixed-use retail/apartment building, with Legacy Lounge on the first floor and apartments on the second and third, according to city land records. It’s across the street from the post office and city hall.
