ANSONIA – Members of the Board of Aldermen are scheduled to consider a resolution to expand property tax exemptions for some disabled veterans, following a state law passed in 2024 and expanded in 2025.

At its Jan. 13 meeting, the board is scheduled to discuss a resolution which grants an exemption to veterans permanently deemed 100-percent disabled based on individual unemployability by the Veterans Administration.

The exemption would apply to a qualifying veteran’s primary residence, or, if they don’t own a residence, to one motor vehicle, according to a press release from Mayor Frank Tyszka’s office.

To qualify, a veteran must live in Ansonia, have wartime service as defined in state law, and have a 100-percent Total Disability Individual Unemployability designation.

Veterans would need to submit DD-214 and VA rating documentation to the tax assessor’s office to qualify, according to the press release.

Veterans or surviving spouses with questions can contact the assessor’s office at 203-736-5950.

Tyszka said in the press release that the move will help keep veterans in their homes.

“By extending this exemption to veterans with a 100-percent TDIU determination, our city is properly honoring that sacrifice and helping ensure that those who gave so much to our nation can afford to remain in their homes,” Tyszka said.
