THE VALLEY – Three-term state Sen. Jorge Cabrera (D-Hamden) announced he is seeking a fourth term in office.

In The Valley Indy coverage area, Cabrera represents Ansonia, Derby and Seymour. He also represents people who live in Beacon Falls, Bethany, Hamden (where he lives) and Woodbridge – the 17th State Senate District.

“The overarching themes of the next several years in Connecticut are going to be affordability and economic opportunity. I’m committed to continuing my legislative work on both fronts to benefit the people of my district, and of this state, of all ages and from all walks of life,” Cabrera said in a written statement issued Jan. 12.

Cabrera was first elected in 2020.

In the General Assembly he is chairman of the insurance and real Estate committee, and vice-chairman of both the finance, revenue & bonding committee and the labor and public employees committee, according to a press release announcing his re-election.

“We are blessed to live in a state where hard work is honored, where differences are respected, and where opportunity abounds. I want to ensure that we hold to these ideals and continue to move Connecticut forward into an even brighter future,” Cabrera said.

The statement touts Cabrera’s efforts to “improve affordability in Connecticut,” which include temporarily funding the SNAP program when the federal government shut down, voting to reduce electric bills for residents, and to help pay insurance premiums for residents covered by Access Health CT.

“Sen. Cabrera also voted in 2025 to support the creation of a new, statewide endowment for early childhood education that will help families afford daycare — thereby making it easier for parents to work — and he voted for tens of millions of dollars in new special education funding for local schools,” according to the statement.
