MILFORD — A 28-year-old man was sentenced to 12 years in prison for hitting and killing an elderly couple in Seymour with his car and then fleeing the scene, The Connecticut Post reported.
Jair Irigoyen-Flores, of West Haven, pleaded “nolo contendere” to four felonies in Superior Court in Milford April 6. The felonies are: two counts of second-degree manslaughter, and two counts of misconduct with a motor vehicle.
Irigoyen-Flores hit James and Barbara Tamborra, both 81, of Shelton, as they attempted to cross Route 67 at about 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 10, 2021.
The Tamborrsa were leaving a crowded wake at a funeral home when they were struck while walking to their vehicle parked in a lot across Route 67. A police officer acting as a crossing guard was almost struck, too.
Police developed Jair Irigoyen-Flores as a suspect from an anonymous tip and vehicle debris left at the scene of the crime. Police said he was arrested just before he was scheduled to fly to Mexico. He was arrested Dec. 23, 2021 and initially charged with two felony counts of second-degree manslaughter along with evading responsibility.
The prosecution believed Irigoyen-Flores was drunk when he hit the married couple and fled. However, they could not prove it, the Post reported.
