ANSONIA – The Board of Apportionment and Taxation (or tax board) is scheduled to meet and potentially recommend a budget April 22.

The meeting is 6 p.m. at the Erlingheuser Room, on the second floor of city hall (253 Main St). It is open to the public. Click here to view the agenda.

The tax board has been holding meetings since early March to try to reach agreement on a budget to recommend to the city’s Board of Aldermen. They are working off of a $68.1 million spending plan proposed by Mayor Frank Tyszka last month.

The board has discussed reducing that number in past meetings but has not yet finalized a new budget proposal.

Under Tyszka’s original proposal, the mill rate would increase by 2.27 mills, to 30.82. The current mill rate is 28.55.

The tax board is also scheduled to introduce the city’s new chief financial officer, Michael Iodice, as well as newly appointed tax board member Diane Stroman at the April 22 meeting.

After the tax board recommends a budget, the Board of Aldermen will have the opportunity to make their own revisions before voting to adopt a budget. If the Aldermen’s final budget includes an increase of more than 3 percent in ‘net taxes to be collected,’ it will require a referendum vote before it can be adopted.

Members of the tax board and Board of Aldermen have said they plan to hold joint meetings with both boards going forward, so that information can be shared more easily between the two.

The fiscal year for the proposed budget begins July 1.
