ANSONIA — Investigators used a search warrant to confiscate 41 animals from a house on Schumacher Drive Thursday (April 23).
No criminal charges have been filed as of 11:48 a.m. Friday. The investigation was triggered by a report of possible animal cruelty and unsanitary living conditions at the house.
Police said in a media release that 39 dogs and two ferrets were taken from the house.
“Officers found garbage, animal feces and urine throughout the house. The living conditions in the residence were deemed to be unsanitary and unsafe, the house was condemned by the Ansonia building inspector,” according to a statement issued by Lt. Patrick Lynch.
Three juveniles — ages 15, five and two — were in the house, as were two adult females who were not named.
The Department of Children and Families was present during the raid. The juveniles were taken to a hospital to be evaluated.
The dogs taken from the home seem to be healthy, though a vet is still checking them out.
“The investigation is ongoing and more information will be released as it becomes available,” Lynch said.
Animal control officers from Oxford and Woodbridge assisted.
