Joseph R. Mauro Jr., age 69, a resident of Ansonia for thirty-nine years, entered eternal rest on May 3, 2026, at Yale New Haven Hospital. He was the loving husband of Susan (Fracasse) Mauro.

Born in Staten Island, New York on November 1, 1956, he was the son of the late Joseph R. Mauro and Lois (Paliwoda) Mauro. Joe was a 1979 graduate of Southern Connecticut State University, attaining his Bachelor’s degree in teaching. Driven by a lifelong passion for the sky, Joe went on to further his education at the University of Oklahoma, gaining his second degree in Meteorology.

His career began at the National Severe Storms Laboratory in Oklahoma where he studied and chased tornados. He then went on to work for Universal Weather and Aviation at the Westchester County Airport until his retirement.

Joe was a devout communicant of Assumption Church in Ansonia and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #23, where he served as Grand Knight. He was also a member of the Elks Club and the Catholic War Veterans both in Derby. Wanting to share his research and health experiences with others, Joe authored a book “I am Joe’s Heart Attack.” 

In addition to his wife Susan, Joe leaves to cherish his memory, son, Christopher J. Mauro of New Haven, daughter, Tracey Gallagher (Keegan) of Sapulpa, OK, brother, Jaime Mauro (Mary Beth Alfone) of Branford, sister, Jill Sweet (Paul) of Madison, grandson, Jack Gallagher of OK, aunts, Dorothy Rosenberg and Marie Illuzzi both of Staten Island, sisters-in-law, Amy Mauro of Dundee, NY, Cathleen Fracasse of South Egremont, MA and Nancy Fracasse (Bob Drake) of Andover, CT, brother-in-law, Paul Fracasse of Cheshire, CT, along with several nieces, nephews and numerous cousins in NY. He was predeceased by his brothers, John and Jason Mauro.

Relatives and friends are invited to greet the family and pay their respects on Saturday June 20, 2026 from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM in the chapel of SPINELLI-RICCIUTI FUNERAL HOME, 62 Beaver Street in Ansonia. At 3:00 PM, a funeral service in celebration of Joe’s life will take place with Reverend Jeffery Gubbiotti officiating. Inurnment in West Cemetery in Madison, CT will be private and at the convenience of the family.
