OXFORD – John J. Broas, age 71 of Oxford, beloved husband of Mary (Siena) Broas, entered peaceful rest on Thursday, May 21, 2026 in Griffin Hospital with family by his side. Born in Danbury on August 28, 1954, he was a son of the late Frederick and Grace (Hannon) Broas.

He retired after over 30 years as a greenskeeper at Ridgewood Country Club of Danbury. He then dedicated his life to his most important job: being a stay-at-home Dad. Whatever school activity or sporting event his boys participated in, you could find John on the sidelines or in the stands. As his chidren grew older, he started his own Handyman Business. John loved building and fixing things at our house and for customers. He felt rewarded by helping other people, so we always chided him about his ridiculously low rates. But in times of other families’ needs, he showed up without fail. You could find John on the road, trailer in tow loaded with his commercial mower.

He is survived by his cherished wife Mary, and sons Matthew (Ana Guillet), William, and Jonathan all of Oxford. John’s love for his wife and sons was the foundation our family was built. We were far from perfect, but there was always an abundance of love, kindness, and forgiveness.

In addition to his wife and sons, he leaves behind sisters and sister-in-law Mary, Lucille, and Patricia all of Danbury; nephew Christopher(Sarah), and their children, brother-in-laws Michael and Peter(Amy); cousin Carol, and a loving circle of friends.

In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by his brother, Bill Broas, and cousins Tara Troy Gambardella and Denise Szetela.

John was always a sports fanatic. Our lives revolved around the kid’s baseball, basketball, and flag football games. Family discussions revolved around teams, players, coaches, defense and offense of whatever sport season we were in. He was an avid Hartford Whalers, Boston Red Sox, and NY Giants fan. He was also a converted NY Knicks fan under extreme pressure from his boys.

John fought bravely against Parkinson’s Disease. During his 6 year battle, he participated in a Parkinson’s based Boxing class called Fight Back IYC. This program helps people living with Parkinson’s improve strength, balance, confidence, and quality of life while fostering a supportive community. He found instant camaraderie with his instructor Stephanie and the other participants.
