It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Bill Chaplick, affectionately known as Coach Chap, who left us suddenly. Born in New Haven, Conn, Bill was raised in Ansonia by his loving parents, Pauline Chaplick and the late Peter Chaplick. He is also remembered for his late sister, Holly Connor.
Bill attended Ansonia High School, where he was a Hall of Fame player and earned a full scholarship to Boston College. A proud graduate of BC, Bill excelled as a standout on the offensive line, showcasing his passion for football from an early age. After a brief career in the private sector, he dedicated his life to nurturing young athletes, ultimately becoming a pivotal figure at Milford Academy. This post-graduate program transformed from a preparatory school for Yale into a beacon of hope for student-athletes seeking a second chance. Under Bill’s leadership, Milford Academy provided gifted players the opportunity to earn athletic scholarships at major universities across the nation, with many going on to achieve successful careers in the NFL.
Former players and coaches have shared deeply moving reflections on the profound impact Coach Chaplick had on their lives. One remarked, “It is with gratitude and respect that I reflect upon the extraordinary dedication of Coach Chaplick. His unwavering commitment and tireless advocacy were truly instrumental in shaping the trajectories of countless athletes. He consistently championed our aspirations, navigating challenges to ensure we had the best opportunities. His legacy of support and guidance has left an indelible mark on all those he mentored.”
Another expressed, “You took a chance on me as a young man and gave me the opportunity to do what I love. Your mentorship and guidance to not just me, but so many others, has changed countless lives.” A further reflection came from a coach: “At 27 years old, you gave me the chance to coach the game I love and changed the course of my life. Thank you for believing in me. Your impact will never be forgotten, and you will be truly missed.”
One former player emphasized, “I’m forever grateful for the memories, opportunities, and lessons he provided that helped shape my life. His impact reached far beyond the football field and touched so many people.” Another stated, “Coach Chap was a true leader of men, with a selfless spirit and a heart of gold.”
Bill is survived by his mother, Pauline; his sister, Nancy; his three children, Danielle, Michael, and Peyton; and his two grandchildren Molly and Jack. He shared a loving partnership with Cheryl Rich of North Haven for over ten years, creating cherished memories together throughout their time. He is also survived by his beloved dog, Flynn, who provided him with unwavering love and support every day.
In this time of loss, we remember Bill not only for his contributions to the world of football but also for the unwavering advocacy he provided to so many. and the heart he poured into his mission.
As stated in the Hartford Courant article titled “Worth a Hike” on June 23, 2004, “Milford Academy lives because Chaplick would not let it die!”
Rest in peace, Coach Chap. You will be greatly missed, but your legacy will never be forgotten.
Services will be held on June 13th at Jenkins King & Malerba Funeral Home. Calling hours will be from 9:00 to 11:00 AM, followed by the service from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM. A reception will take place afterward.
