George J. Tomcho, Jr., age 90, of Shelton, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, July 23, 2026, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of 63 years to Barbara (Barowski) Tomcho, with whom he shared a lifetime of love, laughter, and cherished memories.
Born on August 30, 1935, in Olyphant, Pennsylvania, George was the son of the late George and Ann (Fedorko) Tomcho. George proudly served his country in the United States Air Force before beginning a 40-year career at Sikorsky Aircraft. George and Barbara embraced retirement by traveling together and making new memories, although nothing brought George greater happiness than his family. The family’s annual vacations to Cape Cod became some of George’s happiest times. Those trips created a lifetime of treasured memories that his family will forever hold close to their hearts.
George loved any reason to gather everyone together—a birthday, anniversary, graduation, holiday, or simply just because. His beloved “Sunday Funday” became a treasured family tradition. Every Sunday, the family gathered to watch sports, share a meal, laugh, tell stories, and simply enjoy being together. While the games were always part of the fun, especially when his beloved New York Giants were winning, the true joy for George was having the people he loved most around him.
George found joy in the simple things. He loved tinkering around the house, always finding a project to work on, and took great pride in keeping his yard beautiful. He cherished being “Papa,” spending time with his grandchildren, babysitting them, celebrating their accomplishments, and filling their lives with love and laughter.
George is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara; his loving children, Susan Trapp and her husband Robert, Lori Anderson and her husband Jeffrey, and Mark Tomcho and his wife Jessica; his cherished grandchildren, Kyle, Kacie, Taylor, Sarah, Julia, and Matthew; his sister, Pearl Hudak; and several nieces and nephews.
George’s final year was marked by health challenges, but he was able to remain in the comfort of his home, surrounded by those he loved most. His family is deeply grateful for the extraordinary love and care provided by his wife Barbara, whose devotion never wavered throughout his illness. They are also forever thankful for his compassionate caregivers, Yvonne, Mandy, RN Sarah, and NA Mark, whose kindness, patience, and gentle spirits brought comfort, laughter, and smiles to George, even on his most difficult days.
Anyone who knew George knew the words he faithfully spoke whenever someone was leaving: “Be Careful.” Even when illness made speaking difficult, he never let anyone walk out the door without hearing those two simple words. They were his quiet way of saying, “I love you,” and his family will carry them wherever they go.
Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, July 30, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, 50 Fairmont Place, Shelton. Military Honors will follow at the church.
The family kindly requests that any donations be made to the VA West Haven Connecticut Healthcare System that provided compassionate support and services to George and his family during his final days.
