ANSONIA — A 38-year-old city resident was charged Wednesday (July 8) with firing a gun at another motorist on Route 8.

Jonathan Sanabria was charged with reckless driving, illegal discharge of a firearm, first-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment, and improperly storing a firearm so that a minor could potentially access.

According to a criminal information summary posted to the web by state police, troopers were sent to Route 8 south near exit 17 at about 6:51 p.m. for a reported shooting.

A 35-year-old man told police another motorist fired shots at his vehicle. The victim provided video which showed his vehicle had been shot at twice, police said.

Both the suspect’s vehicle and the victim’s vehicle left the highway and drove into Ansonia.

Troopers said their investigation identified Sanabria as the shooter.

Sanabria was taken into custody in the area of North Spring Street.

The victim is from the Wakelee Avenue area (though the summary also lists a Bridgeport home address), which accounts for the large police presence on the road Wednesday evening.

Sanabria, of Fifth Street, was held on a $125,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in Superior Court in Derby today (Thursday, July 9).

It is not clear what prompted the incident, or the precise circumstances that caused police to charge improper firearm storage connected to underage access.
