DERBY – Police said a football player was assaulted after a game July 18.
According to an email from Derby Police Chief Brian Grogan, police were sent to the Leo F. Ryan Athletic Complex Saturday at 9 p.m. for a report of a large fight.
Grogan said a men’s league tackle football game was being played, but the game ended early after the players began fighting.
“The disturbance continued after the game ended, and during the incident one player was reportedly struck in the head with a football helmet by a member of the opposing team,” Grogan wrote.
The victim was semi-conscious, police said, and was taken to Griffin Hospital.
“The Derby Police Department is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the events leading up to the altercation and the actions of those involved,” Grogan wrote.

After this story was shared to Valley Indy Facebook, a person under the Valley Generals’ Facebook account said the victim was from that team.
“Before there are any wrong narratives we would like to inform our neighbors that it was our player that was hit,” the comment on Valley Indy Facebook read. “Derby has been the place that we’ve called home for many years we’ve never had an issue or any physical altercation.”
The Valley Generals were playing the Northeast Bulls, according to this website.
The teams are part of the New England Football League.
