Nina Kosowsky, 80, of Shelton, passed away peacefully at home on September 23, 2026,
following a sudden illness. Born in Derby on February 15, 1946, she was the beloved daughter of the late Frank and Helen Statkevich Kosowsky. A lifelong Shelton resident, Nina was a graduate of Shelton High School, Class of 1963. She continued her education with great dedication, earning a Bachelor of Science degree from Central Connecticut State College in 1967, a Master of Science degree from the University of Bridgeport in 1968, and her Sixth-Year Teaching Certificate from Southern Connecticut State University in 1972.
Nina devoted her professional life to education and was deeply committed to helping children develop their reading skills and reach their full potential. She began her teaching career as a substitute teacher with the Shelton and Seymour Boards of Education in 1967-1968. In 1968, she joined the Oxford Board of Education, where she continued to teach for many years. She became a remedial reading teacher in 1972 and later served as Reading Curriculum Coordinator from 1981 to 1989 and as a gifted and talented teacher from 1985 to 1990 at the Great Oak Middle School. Her commitment to education extended beyond the classroom. Nina was a member of the Oxford Education Association, Connecticut Education Association, National Education Association, and International Reading Association.
In her younger years, Nina worked part-time as a travel agent for the World Tec Travel Agency. Her passion for adventure and exploration made her a seasoned global traveler & cruise enthusiast.
A woman of deep faith and service, Nina was a dedicated lifelong member of Three Saints
Orthodox Church in Ansonia. She served as Recording Secretary from 1975 to 1989 and was involved with numerous church committees throughout the years. She served as President of Three Saints Orthodox Church for more than 30 years, reflecting her extraordinary devotion to her church and community. A favorite among the children of the parish, Nina would spend hours baking cookies and wrapping them in individual care packages for them to enjoy following the liturgy. At the time of her passing, she was serving as President of FORCC (Fellowship of Orthodox Churches of Connecticut).
Nina will be long-membered for her compassionate care and devotion to her mother, Helen, who lived to 105 years. Nina’s lifelong devotion to education, her Orthodox faith, and her countless years of service to her church and community. Her dedication, leadership, and commitment to others touched many lives and will continue to be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her. She is survived by her devoted brother, Paul Kosowsky and his wife Elaine of Seymour; step-nephew, Brian King of Seymour and step-niece, Nicole Bodner of PA; as well as many dear cousins from the Pawchyk, Statkevich and Kosowsky families.
Family and friends may call on Friday, September 25, 2026, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, with a Panakhida at 6:30 PM, at Wakelee Memorial Funeral Home, 167 Wakelee Avenue, Ansonia. Funeral services will take place on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at Three Saints Orthodox Church, 26 Howard Avenue, Ansonia with visitation from 9:00 to 10:00 AM, followed by services at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, Ansonia.
