ANSONIA – Police said they arrested a 12-year-old in connection to a social media threat made against an Ansonia school.
In a press release, police said the juvenile was charged with first-degree threatening and breach of peace Sept. 28.
There is “no credible threat to the Ansonia Public School System, its students, or its staff,” according to the release.
Police officers were assigned to patrol Ansonia schools Sept. 28 after school officials were notified over the weekend that a threat had been posted on TikTok. The threat allegedly referenced a public school in Ansonia.
Investigators identified the person who made the post as a 12-year-old former Ansonia student, who now attends school in another town.
After the arrest, the child was released to the custody of a parent, with a court date scheduled at juvenile court in Waterbury.
“The Ansonia Police Department takes all threats involving our schools seriously. The Department will continue to work closely with Ansonia Public Schools and our law enforcement partners to thoroughly investigate reports of threats and take appropriate action to protect the safety of our students, faculty, and staff,” the release says.
Original story follows:
ANSONIA – Police officers were assigned to patrol Ansonia schools Monday (Sept. 28) after an unspecified social media post was brought to the attention of school officials.
“At this time, there is no known threat to our schools. However, out of an abundance of caution, police will be circulating all Ansonia schools to help ensure the safety and security of all students and staff,” according to a message sent to parents by Superintendent Joseph DiBacco.
DiBacco wrote that school officials were informed of a post over the weekend, which was referred to police. The post was taken down and police are continuing to investigate, the message says.
Additional details – such as what was in the post or who made it – were not available as of Monday morning. Voicemails were left with DiBacco and Ansonia Police Lt. Alexander Barreira seeking further information.
