SEYMOUR – Seymour Middle School (SMS) is proud to announce that it has been recognized as a 2027 U.S. News & World Report Best Middle School, an honor awarded to schools ranking among the top 40% of middle schools in their respective states.
In the newly released rankings, Seymour Middle School placed 93rd in Connecticut, climbing an impressive 50 positions from its ranking of 143rd the previous year.
The annual U.S. News & World Report Best Middle Schools rankings recognize schools for their academic performance, using assessment data in mathematics and reading while accounting for student demographics and socioeconomic factors.
“This is a tremendous accomplishment for Seymour Middle School and a reflection of the hard work taking place in our classrooms every day,” said Keith O’Rourke, Principal of Seymour Middle School. “Moving up 50 positions statewide speaks to the dedication of our teachers, the commitment of our students, and the support of our families.”
Dr. Susan Compton, Superintendent of Seymour Public Schools, praised the school community for its continued progress and commitment to student achievement.
“We are incredibly proud of Seymour Middle School and this well-deserved recognition,” said Compton. “This accomplishment reflects the outstanding work of our educators, the determination of our students, and the strong leadership at SMS. It is exciting to see their efforts recognized at the state level, and I look forward to their continued success.”
O’Rourke emphasized that while rankings are only one measure of a school’s success, the recognition provides an opportunity to celebrate the progress being made.
“Our goal has always been to create a school where students feel supported, are challenged academically, and are encouraged to reach their full potential,” O’Rourke added. “We are proud of this recognition, but we know there is always more work to do.”
Seymour Middle School serves students in grades 6 through 8 and continues to emphasize academic achievement, student growth, positive school culture, and meaningful relationships between students and staff.
The recognition is a source of pride for the entire Seymour Public Schools community and reflects the school’s continued commitment to providing a high-quality educational experience for every student.
