ANSONIA – A man leaving the post office Tuesday afternoon stomped out a fire before it became a bigger problem.
Ansonia firefighters received a call around 1:38 p.m. reporting a brush fire in the post office lawn (237 Main St). The man who placed the call stomped out most of the fire on his own before a crew arrived, according to Assistant Chief Matt Pitney.
Pitney, who led the fire department’s response, said the fire was out by the time he arrived, and that firefighters hosed the smoldering lawn to be safe.
The crew included three full members of the department and two members of the Ansonia Fire Department Juniors, according to Pitney.
“It’s good to get the young kids involved. That’s something that they can do,” Pitney said. “They’re limited on what they can do, so getting them involved in something small like that leads them to when they can become a full member and do some bigger stuff.”
He said the juniors on the team hooked up the hose so the lawn could be sprayed down.
Members of the Juniors program – teenagers aged 14 through 18 – participated in their first swearing-in ceremony in July. The program, meant to boost recruitment, helps local youths learn the ropes of firefighting while giving back to their community.
