DERBY – Police on Wednesday released the name of a 55-year-old woman who was killed in a car crash on Roosevelt Drive on Friday night.
Police identified the person as Robin Slane, 55, of Waterford.
According to Derby Police Sgt. Daniel Donston, Slane was driving a 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan heading west on Roosevelt Drive near Cullens Hill Road at about 7:15 p.m. on Friday when a 2023 Grand Cherokee heading in the opposite direction crossed the centerline and collided with her.
Slane was pronounced dead at the scene.
Slane was travelling with three family members, ages 19, 22, and 55, along with a canine. The 19-year-old passenger was hospitalized as of Sept. 10, police said. The two other passengers were treated and released.
The driver of the Grand Cherokee involved in the crash was identified as Marcus Delgado, 55, of Brookfield. He was treated and released from a hospital for minor injuries.
The crash remains under investigation. No tickets have been issued.
A Derby firefighter, who was helping remove the passengers inside the Dodge Caravan, was bit in the face by the nervous dog inside the car. Donston said the firefighter sought treatment on his own for a minor facial injury.
The dog was brought to VCA Shoreline — an animal hospital — by Shelton Animal Control for evaluation following the crash, and has since been released.
Derby Storm Ambulance Chief Tom Lenart extended the department’s prayers to the victims of the crash and their families. He was thankful to the various area response partners who provided mutual aid.
The Valley Indy published several stories between 2012 and 2014 questioning the safety of Roosevelt Drive (Route 34) in the area of Friday’s deadly crash.
In 2014, the state Department of Transportation announced crews would install ‘rumble strips’ in the center of the road. The strips are designed to alert motorists when they cross the center line.
