Memorial Day Observance

Ripton Parish Chapter, NSDAR Inc. Celebrates, Honors, and Remembers

The members of the Ripton Parish Chapter, NSDAR, Inc. wish everyone a safe and fun-filled Memorial Day. On Monday, May 25, 2026, when we are enjoying the sunshine at the beach; grilling hot dogs and hamburgers in our backyards; or just hanging out at our friends’ or relatives’ homes, let’s all take a moment to remember the men and women who fought and died for the freedom we enjoy today.

With America 250! just a few weeks away, we wish to remember the strength, courage, sacrifices and valor of the many men and women who gave their all in the fight for independence. The American Revolution would not have happened without the decisions, sacrifices and valor of ordinary people. Under the leadership of General George Washington, the men and women of the Revolutionary era, followed and believed in freedom and supported the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. Since then, tens of thousands of service men and women sacrificed their lives to enable us to be free today.

Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, originated during the Civil War when citizens placed flowers on the graves of those who had been killed in battle. After the end of the Civil War, many cities continued the tradition of placing flowers on the graves. In 1868, a national holiday was promoted. After WWI, May 30 was observed in honor of all who died in all US wars and became known as Memorial Day. In 1971, Memorial Day became a federal holiday celebrated the last Monday in May.

Memorial Day is a day of remembrance and many Americans observe the Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings or participating in parades. Ripton Parish Chapter, NSDAR, Inc. encourage all citizens to commemorate those who came before us for their courage and sacrifice fighting for the freedoms we enjoy today.
