Registration for Junior Rangers opens August 27th

Junior Rangers meets Thursdays, from 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM, for 8 weeks
September 10 through October 29

A FREE after-school volunteer program for teens, our Junior Rangers help with conservation projects, animal care, Autumn Festival, and more!

The Ansonia Nature Center is seeking motivated, hard-working teens ages 11 to 14 who love nature for our afterschool Junior Rangers volunteer program. Get behind-the-scenes access and learn what a career in environmental education entails as you work with a team on a variety of volunteer projects. For this 8-week fall session, we will be focused on designing and creating displays and games for our Autumn Festival on Oct 17, with additional time spent on habitat restoration.

Pond Life Hike

Saturday, August 29 @ 2:00 p.m.

Explore the lively ecosystem surrounding Redwing Pond with Ranger Jeremy. Participants will search for frogs, turtles, aquatic insects, fish, and other wildlife while learning about wetland habitats and the importance of healthy freshwater ecosystems. Wear clothes that can get a little muddy. FREE!

Nix the Knotweed: the Last Hurrah!

Saturday, September 5 @ 9:30 am 

Join Ranger Maria and the Conservation Corps for the final knotweed cut of the season as we continue restoring native habitat areas throughout the Nature Center. Volunteers will help remove invasive growth while learning about ecological restoration and long-term stewardship efforts. A potluck-style lunch at Pavilion #2 will follow the work session.

The Four Seasons Classic Car Club

Inaugural Cruise: Sunday, September 6th from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Our Fall Classic Series of car and coffee cruises will take place Sundays, September 6th through November 22nd, from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. GR8COFFEE will be here, and entry is FREE for cruisers and spectators.

Late Summer Meander

Saturday, September 12 @ 2pm

Join Ranger Jeremy for a relaxing afternoon hike through the trails of the Nature Center as summer slowly begins its transition into autumn. Along the way, we’ll observe seasonal changes in plants and wildlife while enjoying the sights and sounds of late summer in the woods and meadows. Dress for the weather and wear shoes appropriate for hiking. FREE for all ages.

Native Seeding Day

Saturday, September 19 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Join Ranger Maria and help restore our habitats by collecting seeds from native plants for future planting. Enjoy a pleasant autumn walk and help our conservation efforts while you’re at it! Our meadows are a hugely important part of the overall ecosystem. Join Ranger Maria in harvesting seeds from the milkweeds, asters, and goldenrods to plant in the meadow next spring. FREE for ages 12- adult.

Full Harvest Moon Hike

Friday, September 25 @ 7pm

Join Nature Center naturalists on a hike by the light of the moon! Listen for the sounds of nocturnal animals while we use our night vision and other senses for this after-dark expedition in the park.

Dress in layers and wear proper foot gear for this moderate hike on sometimes uneven terrain. Inclement weather or dangerous conditions will cancel the hike. All ages welcome; no pets or strollers. An adult must accompany each child. Registration required. Please arrive on time, or hike may leave without you.
