(Editor’s note Jan. 8: The woman who reported the robbery to police was charged with falsely reporting the incident.)

Shelton police responded to a report of an attempted robbery Thursday afternoon after a woman said a man tried to grab her purse downtown.

The incident occurred about 3:15 p.m., according to police.

A 20-year-old female reported to police that she was walking through the parking lot of the post office, located at 83 Bridge St., when a black male approached her and attempted to grab her purse,” Shelton Police Lt. Robert Kozlowsky said in an email Friday.

The man did not take anything from the woman, Kozlowsky said.

Though the woman observed what appeared to be a handle of a black pistol in his jacket pocket,” the man did not display the gun was displayed during the incident, Kozlowsky said.

Shelton police put out a be-on-the-lookout” to other police departments in the area alerting them to the attempted robbery, and saying the man may have fled onto Route 8 in a black, four-door Honda Civic with damage on its passenger side.
