Oxford Tax Collector Will Remain Elected

The Oxford tax collector position will remain elected, after voters rejected proposed charter changes at the polls Tuesday.

The town’s charter revision commission had recommended the tax collector position become a hired post, after a scandal in the tax office.

But voters rejected the proposed change by a margin of 2 to 1. The specific tallies weren’t available as of 11:30 p.m. Tuesday. The Republican American reported the vote as 3,063 to 1,625.

Former Tax Collector Karen Guillet resigned in June after she was tied to alleged missing money from the Tax Collector’s Office. The matter is still being investigated by police and no charges have been filed, nor have Selectmen or police have indicated how much money is missing.

Republican Push

The Republican Town Committee pushed hard against the proposal, especially in the last week.

August Palmer, a former first selectman in Oxford and a member of the Republican Town Committee, said members made phone calls and went door to door to talk with voters about the charter revision proposal.

We worked hard and stopped that charter revision,” Palmer said.

First Selectman Mary Ann Drayton Rogers, a Democrat, was unable to be reached for comment late Tuesday.
