A 67-year-old Shelton woman died Monday from injuries sustained in a fire Sunday afternoon, police said.

Police identified the woman as Barbara Curley.

Update: Fire Marshal James Tortora said Tuesday that the fire started in the kitchen and was most likely related to cooking that was underway in that room.

Shelton firefighters were sent to 22 Florence Drive at 3:20 p.m. Sunday. The first crews on scene reported heavy smoke coming from the house, and were told a person was inside.

Crews got Curley out and she was taken to Bridgeport Hospital, where she later passed away.

The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation, but police noted foul play is not suspected.”

Three firefighters also sustained minor injuries in the blaze, Fire Marshal James Tortora said.

It took about 45 minutes to get the fire under control.

The Monroe Fire Department responded with a tanker truck, according to Tortora, and the Nichols Fire Department covered Shelton calls for service during the incident.
