Two committees of Ansonia Aldermen discussed how to respond to allegations of wrongdoing in its tax collector’s office for more than an hour during a joint meeting at City Hall Thursday night.
But citing a need for more concrete information and advice from experts on just what to do in response, they put off any action to another special meeting in two weeks.
Meanwhile, Mayor James Della Volpe announced he hopes to soon hire an interim replacement for the city’s former tax collector, Bridget Bostic, who resigned last Tuesday.

Police Chief Kevin Hale told Ansonia Aldermen Tuesday night that within 48 hours he’ll know “the next step that we’re going to take” in the investigation into irregularities in the city’s tax office.
Mayor James Della Volpe last week asked police and state prosecutors to look into whether problems in the tax office warranted a criminal investigation.
“If there’s a criminal investigation, that should be the number one road,” Hale said Tuesday night. “How that goes, if it goes, we don’t know yet. There’s other discussions I have to have in the next day before we figure that out.”

Ansonia Mayor James Della Volpe said Thursday he never authorized tax collector Bridget Bostic to set up “payment plans” for any residents or city officials struggling to pay their tax bills.
“I never asked the tax office to put anybody on a payment plan, nor have I asked them to do anything for anyone that is not consistent with state law,” Della Volpe said.
The question was posed to the mayor because Bostic — during an interview with a three-person “fact finding” panel probing her office — allegedly said that Della Volpe was aware of a payment plan set up for a resident who owed the city money.

A city “fact finding” report detailing the questionable practices of the Ansonia tax collector will be turned over to the police department, Ansonia Mayor James Della Volpe announced Wednesday.
Also, an outside agency will be contacted to conduct an independent review of the tax office.
The move comes after a Valley Indy investigation published July 18 raised questions about the way Ansonia Tax Collector Bridget Bostic issued “tax clearance” documents to city employees and officials.
Bostic, a union member, was placed on administrative leave Wednesday, the mayor said.
