Marc J. Garofalo

Political party line on the ballot: Democratic

Years lived in town/city:
54

Profession:
Town/City Clerk

Prior elected office title and years served:
Town/City Clerk – 8 years; Mayor – 8 years; Board of Aldermen/Alderwomen – 4 years total – 1 year as President; Board of Apportionment and Taxation – 6 years total – 4 years as Chair; Justice of the Peace – 24 years.

Local community or civic engagement:

Why are you running for office and what do you hope to accomplish?
Since being elected Town/City Clerk eight years ago, I have transformed a completely manual and paper-only system into a more accessible digital format that allows the public 24/7 access to public records. In the last eight years, we have scanned, indexed, and uploaded nearly three hundred volumes, representing over 300,000 pages of land records so that people now have online access to Derby Land Records back to 1856. We did the same with our over three thousand maps so that access is easier for the public.

Our goal in the Town Clerk’s Office is to help our citizens to transact their city business in the most efficient way possible. We know that people work hard and are busy. By continuing to make more records accessible online, we hope to provide people with a positive experience on behalf of the City of Derby.

I have fought for transparency in government and have challenged both Democratic and Republican administrations both privately and publicly, when necessary, to insist that proper procedures are being followed, especially around Freedom of Information issues.

I am working with the Department of Health of the State of Connecticut to implement a new Statewide Electronic Death Registry and a Statewide Electronic Marriage License Registry as Chair of the Connecticut Town Clerks Association’s Liaison Committee with the Department of Health.

If re-elected, I will continue to work in a non-partisan spirit on behalf of all citizens of Derby. I will work to make more records digitally accessible to our citizens from the comfort of their homes. Finally, I will fiercely protect the permanent records of our city so that they are available and accessible to future generations.

I thank you for the opportunity to serve and respectfully ask for your continued support for another term.”

Why are you running for office and what do you hope to accomplish?

It would be an honor to be re-elected Alderwoman for the City of Derby. In the time I have been on the BOA/A, I have learned to keep my ears open and ask questions, and I have displayed integrity and honesty in all interactions. I will continue working to improve communication with and listen to the concerns of the residents of the first ward and all of Derby. I will support measures to increase accountability and transparency in our city government.

After I took office in December of 2019, I attended three in-person BOA/A meetings prior to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Since then, I have regularly attended, via Zoom, most City Meetings to become more aware of the operations of the city. I have met with residents of our downtown to listen to their concerns about their neighborhoods. I have circulated a petition and worked with neighbors in the Academy Hill Rd., Sentinel Hill Rd. and David Humphreys Rd. area to address speeding and road safety. I have also been a strong proponent and advocate for tearing down the vacant and abandoned city-owned buildings on Anson Street and Derby Avenue.

As a regular fitness walker in our City, one of my priorities in a new term will be to focus on establishing a system to clean up our downtown – roads and sidewalks. I will work with my fellow city officials and neighbors to improve pride in our neighborhoods. Working together and improving communication with our citizens are two key factors to a better Derby.”

Why are you running for office and what do you hope to accomplish?
I’m running because I believe there is much at stake for the residents of Derby and their well-being. Over 70% of the City’s revenue comes from single families, which puts the burden of poor municipal decisions on the shoulders of those who strive to make this city their home. We need a unified group of city officials who will work together to bring in business to increase the grand list, foster long-term relationships with local business, and make sure the services provided by the town work for the residents, not the interests of the few.”

Why are you running for office and what do you hope to accomplish?
My name is Alvin Holmes and I am running to serve on the Derby Board of Alderman to be involved with the development and economical growth of the city that I hope will benefit all of its residence. I moved here from New York with my wife and kids in May 2005 and immediately we fell in love with the area.

All my neighbors were so welcoming to my family, we were looking for a safe environment to raise our children’s. The kids loved the area and was able to adjust very easily. I have 2 step kids who have graduated from DHS and a daughter who will be part of the 2022 graduating class.

To be honest, this is my first time running for any political position. However, I did consider running for a seat on the Board of Education during the last election. I was always involved on various committee within the school system and was part of the committee when common core was being transition as the new curriculum. I value our children’s educational opportunities and understand that this is the future for our families and for the city, so we can improve our citizens’ quality of life.

I want to be a voice for the residence of the 2nd ward to make sure their concerns are heard and address. I have come to love this great city and will do my best and be held accountable to the residents of the 2nd ward. As a financial analyst, I understand the importance of making sure our dollars are spent on areas that will revitalize the city and make Derby an attractive place for new businesses and families.

In closing, I hope I can count on your votes and support for the entire Team of Mayor Dziekan for re-election.”

I have lived in Derby all my life and went through the Derby school system; married to Judy (Simmon) Marcucio for the past 57 years. I taught in Derby for 36 years and out of my seventeen retirement years since 2004, have been on the Board of Education for the last fourteen years, serving as Chairman for eight years. If you add it all up, it equals approximately 50 years of being directly involved with Derby education. I believe I know what has to be done to educate our children properly within the means of Derby’s taxpayers.” We have gotten numerous grants to lighten the financial burden of our taxpayers and we plan to continue doing this in the future. Our operating budget has been kept very low the last few years-we know this is very important for the people in Derby while giving our students the best possible education. Our board has done a tremendous job with state and federal grants that has substantially lessened the burden on our taxpayers. Accountability from all teachers and administrators has always been important to me. We are starting to make a headway into establishing a strong curriculum for our students and it is very important that we continue this also.”
