No Swimming At Indian Well State Park, UPDATE IT IS OPEN AGAIN

FILEUpdate Aug. 5: The swimming area at Indian Well State Park in Shelton was reopened Wednesday.

Original post follows below.

State officials closed the swimming area at Shelton’s Indian Well State Park Tuesday (Aug. 4) while they await the results of water tests.

A prepared statement from the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection said that test results are expected Wednesday (Aug. 5).

DEEP samples the water at state parks weekly.

Dennis Schain, a spokesman for DEEP, said when those tests show bacteria above certain levels, the swim areas are closed and more samples are taken.

The most frequent cause of bacteria contamination is the runoff of water from heavy rains,” Schain said in an email. This water sweeps over the ground and paved surfaces and picks up contaminants that then flow into the water.”

Hopefully new test results that are being taken will allow us to reopen that swim area in the next day or two,” he said.

All of the state’s other parks were safe for swimming Tuesday, DEEP reported.
