Oxford Still Dealing With Flooding

It is still too early to estimate damage from Monday’s flooding of the Housatonic River — but more rain is predicted for Thursday and Friday, said Fire Chief Scott Pelletier.

Pelletier is also the director of emergency management for the town. The video shows flooding from Monday along Route 34.

It’s going to be a slow process. We have to get ready and see what Thursday’s weather will do to us,” Pelletier said of the weather forecast.

Oxford properties on the banks of the Housatonic River were probably hit hardest during yesterday’s flooding.

The Housatonic Monday hit its highest mark since 1984. Click here for more information.

The river was at 15 feet Tuesday — still four feet above its flood stage.

In Oxford, it will be up to homeowners to assess their damage and make arrangements with insurance companies. For now, the water is still receding, but houses are still flooded.

Most people have stayed with family and friends or in hotels, but some people are over there figuring out their next move, and getting insurance involved,” Pelletier said.

Twenty-five homes on the Housatonic were affected, according to Sgt. Dan Semosky.

As of 1 p.m. Tuesday, Route 67 over the Southford Falls area bridge near the Southport line, was again open after the bridge was closed since the flood, due to water running over it.
