ANSONIA – The Ansonia Board of Aldermen voted to create a Charter Revision Commission that could change the city budget process to match what elected officials are doing.
During the board’s monthly meeting on March 12, the Aldermen adopted a resolution that gives Mayor David Cassetti 30 days to name members to the commission.
This move follows a Valley Indy story looking at whether there were consequences for violating the budget schedule outlined in the city charter, and whether the administration’s budget scheduling ran afoul of the public’s right to know.

ANSONIA – The Ansonia Board of Aldermen voted March 12 to give volunteer firefighters on storm duty a $10 pay raise, after learning that the current rate is below Connecticut minimum wage.
Volunteer firefighters in Ansonia aren’t paid for most duties. But for fire watch duty – which involves monitoring specific buildings – and storm duty, they are.
The Aldermen adopted a resolution that increases volunteer firefighter storm duty pay from $15 an hour to $25 an hour. The new rate is the same as firefighters currently get when assigned to fire watch.

ANSONIA — One person was sent to the hospital after a house fire on Belleview Terrace on Friday evening (March 15).
The extent of the man’s injuries were not known, but Ansonia Fire Department Assistant Chief Anthony DeLucia said he was taken to Griffin Hospital for an evaluation.
The Ansonia Fire Department received a report of a house fire at 5:35 p.m. Derby and Seymour were called to the scene, in addition to EMS, police and fire police.
The first units on scene saw heavy smoke coming out the front of the single-family, ranch-style dwelling. Everyone in the house was able to get out, DeLucia said.
Firefighters entered the house and discovered a fire in a bedroom. It was quickly extinguished. Firefighters checked to see if the fire had spread beyond the bedroom, but it had not.
The fire marshal’s office is investigating the cause and origin.
DeLucia said the house is uninhabitable. The Connecticut Red Cross responded to the scene to help the residents.

ANSONIA – The Ansonia Planning and Zoning Commission approved expansions for a water pump company and a downtown restaurant at their monthly meeting on Feb. 26.
Munch Eatery Brings Bites Outdoors
Munch Eatery, which opened on 560 Main St. last year, is getting a backdoor patio. The patio plan approved by the commission also includes an outdoor grill, barbecue, and pizza oven, as well as a fire pit and bar.
Chef Mike Cotela, who organizes bookings at Munch, said that the patio will improve the restaurant’s ability to host events.
“As we started booking the hall, and people started to see what we can offer, the question has been: ‘Can we go outside?’” Cotela said.

ANSONIA – Members of Ansonia’s Water Pollution Control Authority (WPCA)want answers about the potential sale of the city’s wastewater assets.
In a meeting on March 6, board members said they’re being kept in the dark about the sale of the wastewater system they supervise.
“We haven’t been told anything about this sale, any information. Who’s looking to buy it, who’s coming to look at it, what kind of prices. Officially, technically, we’re completely out of the loop,” board member and Alderman Dan King said.

Editor’s note: The inspection report cited in this story mistakenly said the Coe Pond Dam is in Seymour. It is not. The Coe Pond Dam referenced here is in Ansonia. This story was revised on March 13, 2024.
ANSONIA – The privately-owned Coe Pond Dam is at risk of failing and poses a threat to people and property, the Naugatuck Valley Council of Governments (NVCOG) announced Monday.
A March 6 inspection report given to NVCOG “details numerous deficiencies” that could cause the dam to breach at any moment.
“A breach would inundate and damage the adjacent commuter rail line with the potential for loss of human life and property,” according to the NVCOG statement. “The report states in no uncertain terms that Coe Pond Dam is an imminent public safety threat and calls into doubt its structural integrity.”
The earth dam keeps water off the Metro-North commuter train tracks. Its failure would flood the tracks.
