Some Team Tate Students In Shelton Not Ready To Move On

A handful of students attempted a sit-in at Shelton High School shortly before 11 a.m. Friday, students leaving the school said.

A larger crowd had formed in the lobby, students said, but administrators told them to return to their classrooms.

Most did, but a handful stayed in the lobby, including junior Mike Rivera.

Administrators sent Rivera home. Click play on the video to hear him talk about the situation.

On Thursday, Shelton school officials said they would not change their decision to ban James Tate from his prom.

Tate hung a giant sign made of cardboard on the school last weekend asking a girl to the prom. He received an in-school suspension. Shelton High School policy states that any student receiving an in-school or out-of-school suspension after April 1 cannot go to the prom.

The media swarmed each student as one tries to leave the school.

In addition to the media, one city alderman was on hand for the circus. Second-ward alderman Eric McPherson watched the scene from the sidewalk.

He said Headmaster Beth Smith should reconsider her decision to suspend Tate, and that he left a message with the superintendent saying as much.

Shelton High School headmaster briefly addressed reporters at the end of the school day, refuting published reports that claimed up to 90 students attempted a sit-in.
