Thousands Expected At Officer’s Funeral


Hundreds of people showed up to viewing hours for Shelton Police Sgt. Orville Smith, who died from injuries after an alleged drunk driver hit him July 3. 

The viewing hours will end at 8 tonight at Shelton High School on Meadow Street.

A funeral for Smith will take place at the high school at 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Smith died on July 7 from his injuries sustained after being hit by a pickup truck.

Smith had been directing traffic on a private duty job on Route 110, when the truck veered off the road and struck him and his cruiser. 

Military honors will be accorded for Smith’s funeral.

Smith served with the U.S. Marines in the Vietnam War. 

He was a Shelton police officer for 39 years, and a popular figure in the community. 

He will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
